At effect:

A person is said to be at effect of something when they have no choice other than to react.

For example:

— Someone gets angry and you automatically get upset instead of simply getting (being with) their anger.
— Someone calls you stupid and you have no choice other than to react angrily instead of simply getting it.
— Someone drives less than the posted speed and you automatically get upset, rather than intend they drive at that speed.
— Someone swears and you automatically, self-righteously, judge them.
*
Someone compliments you and you blush. In other words, there's something about being acknowledged that causes a somatic reaction.
— You find yourself automatically judging a teacher who has a neck tattoo.

You react differently when you hear/read the word fuck—Did reading the word "fuck" just now trigger a twinge of something? There are several free fun communication exercises that will free you from automatic reactions.
